Budhaditya yog is formed when the Sun (Aditya) and Mercury (Budha) sit in the same sign of the birth chart. Classical texts link the pairing with intelligence, skill in speech and a capacity for learning.
It is also one of the most common yogas there is, because Mercury never strays far from the Sun. So the useful question is not "do I have it?" but "how strong is it?": whether Mercury is combust, which signs are involved, and which house the pair falls in. This guide covers the exact rule, how to weigh it, and why no one should pay to "activate" it.
The rule, precisely
Our free kundli lists Budhaditya in its Yogas tab when:
Sun and Mercury in the same sign.
That is the whole test. Degrees do not matter for the rule itself: the Sun at 2° and Mercury at 28° of the same sign form the yoga; the Sun at 29° of one sign and Mercury at 1° of the next do not, even though they are closer.
When the yoga is present, the engine also checks combustion and adds a note if Mercury is combust, "which texts say weakens the yoga".
Why it is so common
Mercury orbits inside Earth's orbit, close to the Sun. Seen from Earth it never gets more than about 28° away from the Sun. That means Mercury is always in the Sun's own sign or in one of the two signs next to it, and much of the time it shares the Sun's sign.
We will not quote a percentage, because the share varies with Mercury's cycle. But the honest summary is: Budhaditya is very common, because Mercury never strays far from the Sun. If someone presents it to you as a rare gift, they are selling something.
That does not make it meaningless. It means the yoga is a starting point, and the details decide what it amounts to.
Combustion: the main weakening factor
A planet too close to the Sun is called combust (asta): its light is swallowed by the Sun's. Classical texts treat a combust planet as weakened in giving its own results.
Our engine uses the common orbs. For Mercury:

Because the yoga needs the two in the same 30° sign, a good share of Budhaditya charts also have a combust Mercury. When that happens the Yogas tab still lists the yoga, with the note. The Planets tab shows the exact longitudes, so you can see how close they are.
Traditions weigh this differently. Many astrologers say the yoga works best when Mercury is in the same sign but outside the combustion orb. Some argue that Mercury, living so close to the Sun, suffers less from combustion than other planets. Our engine does not choose between these views; it states the fact and lets you weigh it.
What the texts associate with it
Saravali and Phaladeepika, in their sections on two-planet conjunctions, describe the Sun joined with Mercury in terms of cleverness, skill in work, pleasant or persuasive speech, learning and good reputation. Some traditions call the pairing Nipuna yoga, the yoga of the skilful. This follows naturally from the two planets:
- The Sun (read more) stands for the self, authority, vitality, the father and government.
- Mercury (read more) stands for intellect, speech, writing, calculation, trade and learning.
Together they are read as intelligence with confidence behind it: the ability to think clearly and to say so. These are tendencies of mind, not guarantees of marks, jobs or money.
What strengthens or weakens it
The sign. Mercury is exalted in Virgo and owns Gemini and Virgo; it is debilitated in Pisces. The Sun is exalted in Aries, owns Leo and is debilitated in Libra. A Sun–Mercury pair in Gemini, Virgo or Leo is generally read as stronger than one in Pisces or Libra.
Combustion. As above: outside the orb is better.
The house from the lagna. The yoga colours the house it falls in:

Aspects and lordship. Benefic aspects help; affliction by malefics weakens. It also matters which houses the Sun and Mercury rule for your lagna. For some lagnas the pair connects a kendra lord and a trikona lord, which adds to its value, as explained in our guide to raj yoga in kundli.
Timing. Like other yogas, it speaks most clearly in the dashas of the Sun or Mercury.
A worked illustration
These are made-up placements, used only to show how the rule and the note behave.
- Sun at 10° Gemini, Mercury at 26° Gemini, Mercury direct. Same sign, 16° apart: the Yogas tab lists Budhaditya with no combustion note.
- Sun at 20° Gemini, Mercury at 25° Gemini. Same sign, only 5° apart: Budhaditya is listed, with the note that Mercury is combust.
- Sun at 28° Taurus, Mercury at 3° Gemini. Only 5° apart, but in different signs: no Budhaditya at all, though Mercury is still combust.
Now suppose the first case belongs to a Virgo lagna. Gemini is then the 10th house. Mercury rules Virgo (the 1st) and Gemini (the 10th) and sits in its own sign in a kendra, so the engine would also list Bhadra yoga, one of the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas. The Sun rules the 12th for Virgo lagna, which some astrologers read as mixing the result. This is exactly the kind of weighing the name alone never tells you.
Why "unlock your budhaditya yoga" selling is wrong
A yoga found in so many charts cannot be a secret key that only a paid ritual opens. Budhaditya is a fact about where two planets stood at birth. Nothing about it is locked, and no gemstone, puja or yantra changes it. If Mercury is combust, that too is a fact to understand, not a defect to buy your way out of.
