Chaturmas 2027: Start and End Dates

Chaturmas is the four months from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devutthana Ekadashi, when Vishnu is said to rest; it is a season of vows and devotion, and by custom of fewer ceremonies.

Chaturmas in 2027

Wednesday, 14 July 2027 – Wednesday, 10 November 2027

Rule: From Devshayani Ekadashi (Ashadha Shukla 11) to Devutthana Ekadashi (Kartika Shukla 11), each fixed by the Smarta Ekadashi rule. An adhik month inside makes it five lunar months.

Times are for New Delhi (IST), from our own engine, Lahiri ayanamsa.

What is Chaturmas?

The four months are Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashvin and Kartika, the monsoon and early autumn. Vishnu is said to sleep on Shesha from Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi and wake on Kartika Shukla Ekadashi, and the season is kept as a time of inward attention. When an adhik month falls inside, Chaturmas lasts five lunar months.

Sannyasis stop travelling and stay in one place for the rains, a practice shared with Jain and Buddhist monks. Householders often take a vow for the season: giving up a food, reading a scripture daily, or keeping every Ekadashi.

Many of the year’s great festivals fall inside it, from Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami to Navratri and Diwali, so the months are not gloomy; only the samskaras wait.

What custom avoids

These are customs, not rules; families and regions differ.

  • Weddings, which resume after Devutthana Ekadashi and Tulsi Vivah.
  • Griha pravesh, mundan and janeu, for most families.
  • By a common custom: leafy greens in Shravana, curd in Bhadrapada, milk in Ashvin and urad dal (split pulses) in Kartika.

Festivals, daily work, travel and purchases go on. The season is valued for vows, satsang, charity and reading, and many keep simpler food through the rains.

How we compute it

Both ends are Ekadashis fixed by the Smarta rule: the day with Ekadashi at sunrise, with Dwadashi left for parana. The dates are for New Delhi; each links to its own page with the parana window and the Vaishnava day where it differs.

Questions people ask

Why are there no weddings in Chaturmas?

By tradition samskaras are done while Vishnu is awake, so wedding muhurats resume after Devutthana Ekadashi. Some communities, especially in the south, follow this less strictly.

Is Chaturmas always four months?

Four lunar months, about 118 days; when an adhik month falls between the two Ekadashis it lasts five.

What is given up in Chaturmas?

Customs vary. A common one gives up leafy greens in Shravana, curd in Bhadrapada, milk in Ashvin and urad dal in Kartika; others give up one food for the whole season. Choose what suits your health.
