Times are for New Delhi (IST), from our own engine, Lahiri ayanamsa. Kutup, rohina and aparahna shift by some minutes with your city’s sunrise and sunset.
What is Pitru Paksha?
Pitru Paksha is the dark fortnight after Bhadrapada Purnima (Ashvin Krishna in the purnimanta reckoning), ending on Sarva Pitru Amavasya. The Purnima shraddha is done the day before it begins.
Shraddha is offered in the afternoon: the texts name the kutup muhurta (the eighth of the day’s fifteen muhurtas), the rohina muhurta (the ninth) and the aparahna that follows as the right time. Tarpan with water and sesame, pinda, and feeding a brahmin, a cow, a crow and a dog are the core acts.
Some days carry special names: Bharani shraddha, Navami for mothers (Matru Navami), Chaturdashi for those who died by accident or violence, and Sarva Pitru Amavasya for everyone, including those whose tithi is unknown.
What custom avoids
These are customs, not rules; families and regions differ.
- Weddings, engagements, griha pravesh and mundan, by a widely kept custom.
- Buying new clothes, jewellery or a vehicle, for families that follow the custom strictly.
- Non-vegetarian food, and often onion and garlic, in the house on the shraddha day.
The fortnight is a time of gratitude, not of fear. Daily work goes on, and giving food to those in need is counted as part of the offering.
How we compute it
Each shraddha tithi is kept on the day it covers the aparahna more; so two tithis can share a day and a date can be skipped. Kutup, rohina and aparahna are computed from New Delhi’s sunrise and sunset (the day divided into fifteen muhurtas).
Questions people ask
Which day should I do shraddha?
On the tithi of the death, whatever the date: find the tithi in the table and use its day. If the tithi is not known, Sarva Pitru Amavasya is for everyone.
What time is shraddha done?
In the afternoon, from the kutup muhurta through aparahna. The table gives the three windows for each day.
Why do two tithis fall on one day?
A tithi is not a solar day. When one is short and does not cover an afternoon of its own, its shraddha is done on the day it shares with the next.
