What is Bhadra?
A karana is half a tithi. Of the eleven karanas, seven repeat through the month, and Vishti, called Bhadra, is one of them. It falls in the second half of Shukla Chaturthi and Ekadashi and of Krishna Tritiya and Dashami, and in the first half of Shukla Ashtami and Purnima and of Krishna Saptami and Chaturdashi — about 99 times a year, each lasting around half a day.
Muhurta Chintamani places Bhadra in one of three worlds by the Moon’s sign: on earth when the Moon is in Cancer, Leo, Aquarius or Pisces; in heaven when it is in Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Scorpio; and in the netherworld when it is in Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius or Capricorn. Custom avoids Bhadra on earth most; many almanacs treat Bhadra in heaven or the netherworld as harmless for work done on earth.
Bhadra is best known from two festivals. Rakhi is tied outside Bhadra, and Holika Dahan is lit outside it, which is why their muhurats sometimes move late into the evening.
What custom avoids
These are customs, not rules; families and regions differ.
- Starting auspicious ceremonies: a wedding, griha pravesh, mundan, or a new business.
- Tying rakhi and lighting the Holika fire.
- Beginning a journey or a major purchase, for those who follow muhurta closely.
Routine work, worship and study go on. The texts also allow acts of courage, legal action and healing in Bhadra, and many priests use its last part (bhadra puchha) when a festival has no other window.
How we compute it
We compute the karanas from the Moon–Sun elongation (each karana is 6°) and list every Vishti. Where the Moon changes sign during a Bhadra, the row shows both parts with their loka. We do not split Bhadra into its mukha (face) and puchha (tail).
Questions people ask
How long does Bhadra last?
About half a day: one karana, half a tithi, usually 11 to 13 hours depending on how fast the Moon moves.
Is Bhadra in heaven or the netherworld to be avoided?
Many almanacs say only Bhadra on earth (Moon in Cancer, Leo, Aquarius or Pisces) affects work on earth. Families differ; the table shows the loka so you can follow your own custom.
Why is rakhi not tied during Bhadra?
By tradition Bhadra is unsuitable for auspicious beginnings, and the festival texts ask for the thread to be tied outside it. Our Raksha Bandhan page gives the Bhadra-free muhurat.
