Diwali is on 8 Nov 2026, but Amavasya still runs at the next sunrise. That day is a gap day (padtar), and Bestu Varas follows it.

Rule: Kartika Shukla Pratipada at sunrise: the first day of the Gujarati Vikram year. When Amavasya still holds at sunrise the day after Diwali, that day is a gap day (padtar) and the new year follows.

How the day is kept

Bestu Varas follows Diwali. Families greet each other with "Saal Mubarak" or "Nutan Varshabhinandan", visit temples and elders, and many temples offer the annakut, a mountain of cooked food, on the day of Govardhan Puja.

Traders close the old year's accounts with Chopda Pujan on Diwali night and open the new books on Bestu Varas or, for many, on Labh Pancham, the fifth day of the bright half of Kartak.

The day after Diwali is sometimes a gap day (padtar or dhoko): when Amavasya still runs at that sunrise, the new year waits one more day for the Pratipada.
