How the Marathi calendar works
The Marathi calendar (panchang, or dinadarshika) is an amanta lunar calendar: each month runs from the day after a new moon (Amavasya) to the next. The months are Chaitra, Vaishakh, Jyeshtha, Ashadh, Shravan, Bhadrapad, Ashvin, Kartik, Margashirsha, Paush, Magh and Phalgun.
Years are counted in the Shaka (Shalivahana) era, which begins on Chaitra Shuddha Pratipada — Gudi Padwa. Almanacs in Maharashtra also print the year's name from the sixty-year cycle of samvatsaras, which changes on the same day.
Marathi usage calls the bright half Shuddha (shukla paksha) and the dark half Vadya (krishna paksha), so a day is written like Bhadrapad Shuddha 4 — Ganesh Chaturthi — or Ashvin Vadya 14 — Narak Chaturdashi. The fifteenth of the bright half is Paurnima, the last of the dark half Amavasya. A tithi that meets no sunrise is skipped in the count (kshaya); one that covers two sunrises repeats.
Festivals in the dark half carry an earlier month name than in north Indian calendars (Gokulashtami is Shravan Vadya 8 here, Bhadrapada Krishna 8 in the north — the same day). Our dates are computed for Mumbai's sunrise; in Pune, Nagpur or Kolhapur a tithi near sunrise can rarely move a day.

A month is named from the Sun's sidereal sign at the new moon that opens it. A lunar month in which the Sun changes no sign is adhik (intercalary, written अधिक …): it repeats the name, and festivals fall in the regular month after it.
