This year the Pratipada begins after sunrise and ends before the next sunrise (a kshaya tithi). A kshaya tithi is kept on the day it begins, so the new year is on this day; in the day-by-day calendar the month name changes from the next sunrise.
Rule: Chaitra Shukla Pratipada at sunrise (a Pratipada that meets no sunrise is kept on the day it begins): the first day of the Shaka year.

How the day is kept
On Gudi Padwa a gudi — a pole topped with an upturned pot, a bright cloth, neem and mango leaves and a garland of sugar crystals — is raised at the door or window, facing the rising sun.
The day begins with an oil bath and a bite of neem leaves with jaggery, bitter and sweet together. Many families hear the new year's panchang read (panchang shravan), and towns hold processions (shobha yatra).
Gudi Padwa is one of the three and a half most auspicious days of the Marathi year (sade teen muhurta), so new ventures and purchases are often begun on it.
