How the Kannada calendar works
The Kannada calendar (panchanga) of Karnataka is an amanta lunar calendar: each month runs from the day after a new moon (Amavasye) to the next. The months are Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwayuja, Karthika, Margashira, Pushya, Magha and Phalguna.
The year begins on Yugadi, Chaitra Shuddha Padya. It is counted in the Shalivahana Shaka era and named from the sixty-year cycle of samvatsaras, the name that the Yugadi panchanga shravana announces with the year's forecast.
Kannada usage calls the bright half Shuddha and the dark half Bahula: Bhadrapada Shuddha Tadige is Gowri Habba and Chauti the next day Ganesha Chaturthi; the full moon is Hunnime and the new moon Amavasye. A tithi that meets no sunrise is skipped (kshaya); one that covers two sunrises repeats.
Our dates are computed for Bengaluru's sunrise. Coastal and northern Karnataka follow the same amanta months; in Mangaluru, Udupi or Kalaburagi a tithi near sunrise can rarely move a day, and temple calendars such as Udupi's or Mysuru's set their own festival days.

A month is named from the Sun's sidereal sign at the new moon that opens it. A lunar month in which the Sun changes no sign is adhik (intercalary, written ಅಧಿಕ …): it repeats the name, and festivals fall in the regular month after it.
