How the day is kept
Yugadi starts with an oil bath and a toran of mango leaves. Families eat bevu-bella — neem and jaggery together — for a year of both bitter and sweet, and make obbattu (holige) for the feast.
The new year's panchanga is read aloud (panchanga shravana): the samvatsara's name, its lords and what the year holds for each rashi.
Yugadi is kept on the day Chaitra Shuddha Padya holds at sunrise; when the Padya touches no sunrise (kshaya), on the day it begins.
