A Ghost in a Dream: Fear, Pressure, Sleep Paralysis

Dreaming of a ghost, being scared by one or talking to it, or feeling pressure on your chest in sleep: what Indian folk belief says and how science explains it.

What follows is what swapna shastra and folk tradition say, told as tradition. A dream is not a prediction: it does not decide money, health or anyone's life, and no dream needs a puja or a paid remedy.

On this page

A ghost in a dream is read in folk belief mostly as a fear, a worry or something unresolved on your mind, and many lists count facing the ghost or driving it away as overcoming difficulties. That is the tradition's view; the dream does not mean there is any evil presence around you. The Hindi search is sapne mein bhoot dekhna.

The ghost dream in folk tradition

Every village has its ghost stories: the peepal tree, the deserted well, the path past the cremation ground. Grandmothers' tales, and now TV and films, plant the image early. Alongside them runs a tradition of reassurance: "bhoot pisach nikat nahin aavai, Mahabir jab naam sunavai" — this line of the Hanuman Chalisa, saying no ghost comes near when Hanuman's name is spoken, is repeated by millions when they feel afraid, and it steadies the mind.

Folk lists differ on the meaning. Some treat the ghost as a symbol of worry; others say that if you see a ghost and stay fearless, a stalled matter moves. The "ghost" of someone you knew who has passed away is usually tied to remembering them, not to fear.

Psychology and sleep science

In dreams a ghost is often the shape of a fear without a name, a worry we cannot put into words by day. A horror film, a story, or sleeping alone in the dark makes the dream more likely.

Many people describe feeling something sitting on their chest or standing in the room while they cannot move. This is sleep paralysis. During REM sleep the body's muscles are naturally relaxed so we do not act out dreams; sometimes the mind wakes while that relaxation lasts a few seconds to a minute or two, and a half-dream paints a "presence". Cultures around the world have explained it as a spirit — Newfoundland's "Old Hag" is one example. It passes by itself. Sleep loss, irregular hours and sleeping on your back can make it more frequent.

Staying calm

A ghost dream needs no puja, exorcism or costly remedy. Enough sleep and a regular bedtime are the best help. If sleep paralysis happens often, or you are very sleepy during the day, speak to a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Is seeing a ghost in a dream a bad sign?

Folk lists mostly link it with a fear or confusion on your mind, and many read facing or chasing off the ghost as overcoming difficulties. It is a belief, not a prediction.

I felt someone sitting on my chest and could not move. Was it a ghost?

Most likely it was sleep paralysis, a common state between sleep and waking in which the body cannot move for a few seconds. It passes by itself and is not dangerous in itself.

What should I do after a ghost dream?

No remedy is needed. If you feel shaken, drink some water, switch on a light, and if it comforts you, say a prayer or the Hanuman Chalisa.
