The thief in folk belief
Indian culture's best-loved "thief" is Krishna the makhan chor, the child who steals butter from the gopis' pots, sung about from the Bhagavata to village songs; Chitchor, stealer of hearts, is one of his names. So not every theft dream was taken as bad. On the other side stand the village night-watchman calling "jaagte raho" and the barking dog, reminders of the fear of a break-in.
A common thread in folk lists is that having your own money stolen in a dream actually signals money coming — "what goes, comes back." But not every list says so, and in some places the dream is read as a lesson not to trust blindly.

Theft dreams are mostly about fear of losing something: money, a job, someone's company, or your own time and effort. If a colleague takes credit for your work, or someone crosses a personal boundary, that feeling can take the shape of a thief. People whose homes were actually burgled often have such dreams for months; it is part of slowly digesting the fright. News of a theft in the neighbourhood can also walk straight into a dream.
Keeping calm
This dream gives no reason to suspect anyone. If you feel uneasy, checking the doors and locks is fine, and that is enough. And if something of yours was stolen in the dream, ask what you have been most afraid of losing lately.
