Travel or Going Abroad in a Dream: Meaning

Travel in a dream, going abroad, boarding a plane or packing bags: how Indian folk tradition reads it and what psychology sees in a journey dream.

What follows is what swapna shastra and folk tradition say, told as tradition. A dream is not a prediction: it does not decide money, health or anyone's life, and no dream needs a puja or a paid remedy.

On this page

Travelling in a dream, or going abroad, is mostly read as auspicious in Indian folk tradition: moving forward, a new beginning or a change on the way. That is tradition, not a forecast; a dream books no ticket and grants no visa. The Hindi search is sapne mein yatra or videsh jana.

What tradition says

The dream chapters of the Puranas count riding forward on an elephant, horse or chariot among good dreams, while some lists call riding a donkey or buffalo towards the south inauspicious. In Indian life a journey has always meant change: a daughter's vidaai, going to the city to earn, setting out on pilgrimage. The word pardes carries both the ache of separation and the hope of returning as someone.

Folk lists read the journey itself: a clear, pleasant road means work will go smoothly; a stony, dark or muddy road means more effort is needed. Reaching the destination is linked to success, and stopping halfway to an obstacle.

A journey to a holy place has its own page: pilgrimage in a dream.

What psychology says

Travel is among the most common dream metaphors, because we already call life a journey. A job change under consideration, preparing to study elsewhere, moving to a new home after marriage: the dream tends to appear around any of these. Dreaming of a foreign country is sometimes plain longing and sometimes the anxiety of being alone somewhere unfamiliar. The feeling in the dream tells you which: was it excitement or unease?

A plain suggestion

Pay attention to the emotion more than the destination. If it was excitement, you may be readier for a change than you thought; if it was fear, talk the change over with someone you trust. Decide on real travel from your own plans and circumstances, not from a dream.

Frequently asked questions

Is dreaming of travel good or bad?

Most folk lists call it auspicious, especially if the road is pleasant: moving forward or a fresh start. A hard road is read as effort ahead. It is tradition, not a prediction.

What does going abroad in a dream mean?

Folk belief links it to a big change, a new place or new work. It does not mean a foreign trip is coming; it may simply be a wish, or a worry, about change.

What does packing bags in a dream mean?

Tradition reads packing as preparations being complete. Psychologically it pictures the mind getting ready for a change.
