From the puja plate to the varmala
Flowers mark every stage of Indian life. Each deity has flowers held dear: red hibiscus for the Devi, dhatura and aak for Shiva, the lotus for Vishnu and Lakshmi, and marigold garlands in every temple and at every festival. At a wedding the couple exchange varmalas, the baraat is welcomed with a shower of petals, and the bride's hair carries a gajra of mogra.
Flowers belong to farewells too; a garland hangs on the photograph of someone who has passed. So dream lists mostly link flowers to joy and devotion, while paying attention to colour and freshness. The colour meanings come from later folk lists, and those lists do not fully agree with each other.

In almost every culture flowers are the language of beauty, love and tenderness. A new relationship, a wedding or a festival on the way makes flower dreams natural. Wilted flowers often picture the sense that a good phase has passed: a friendship cooling, children grown and living far away. After a loss, dreaming of a garland on a photograph is an ordinary part of grief, not an omen.
Something to take from it
A flower dream usually leaves the mind softer. Water the plant on your balcony, or give someone flowers for no occasion. Even the wilted-flower dream asks only that you give an old relationship a little time.
