This year the Pratipada begins after sunrise and ends before the next sunrise (a kshaya tithi). A kshaya tithi is kept on the day it begins, so the new year is on this day; in the day-by-day calendar the month name changes from the next sunrise.

Rule: Chaitra Shukla Pratipada at sunrise, when the new year begins; if it touches no sunrise, the day it begins.

How the day is kept

Ugadi begins before dawn with an oil bath and mango-leaf torans on the door. The day's first food is Ugadi pachadi: neem flowers, raw mango, tamarind, jaggery, salt and chilli — six tastes for the six kinds of experience the year will bring.

In the evening the panchanga shravanam is read in temples and homes: the new samvatsara's name, its ruling planets and the year's forecast for each rashi.

Ugadi is kept on the day Chaitra Shuddha Padyami holds at sunrise; when the Padyami touches no sunrise (kshaya), on the day it begins.
