Dhan yog (dhana yoga) in a kundli is a connection between the lord of a wealth house, the 2nd or the 11th, and the lord of a fortune house, the 5th or the 9th. In our engine the connection counts when the two lords are in the same sign, aspect each other fully, or sit in each other's signs.
It is a supportive combination, not a bank balance. The classical texts say dhana yogas give their results in the dashas of the planets that form them, and only as strongly as those planets are placed. This guide gives the exact rule, the related Lakshmi yoga, what each house stands for, and how to read it calmly. Nothing here is financial advice.
The rule, exactly as our engine applies it
Our free kundli lists Dhana yoga in its Yogas tab when:
A lord of the 2nd or 11th house is joined with a lord of the 5th or 9th: same sign, mutual full aspect, or sign exchange.
Broken down:
- The two sides. One planet must rule the 2nd or the 11th house. The other must rule the 5th or the 9th house. The kundli uses whole-sign houses, so each house is one sign with one lord.
- Same sign. Both lords sit in one sign.
- Sign exchange (parivartana). Each lord sits in a sign owned by the other.
- Mutual full aspect. Each lord aspects the other's sign. Every graha fully aspects the 7th sign from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th. Both directions must hold.
When the yoga appears, the tab names the two planets, which houses they rule, and which of the three connections applies.
One case the engine does not pair
For four lagnas, a single planet rules both sides by itself:

A planet cannot be "joined" with itself, so the engine does not list a Dhana yoga for that planet alone. Many astrologers still treat such a planet as naturally supportive of wealth for that lagna; if yours is one of these four, look at that planet's sign, house and dasha.
Lakshmi yoga
A related combination the engine also checks is Lakshmi yoga:
Lord of the 9th in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra or trikona, and the lagna lord in a kendra or trikona and not debilitated.
The kendras are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses; the trikonas the 1st, 5th and 9th. The idea is simple: the lord of fortune is strong and well placed, and the lord of the self is well placed to receive it. Lakshmi yoga is rarer than Dhana yoga, because the 9th lord must be in its own or exaltation sign, not just connected.
What the four houses signify

Read this way, dhana yoga says: the houses of earning and keeping are linked with the houses of merit and fortune. It is a picture of opportunity meeting ability, not of money falling from the sky.
What strengthens or weakens it
Classical texts judge dhana yogas the same way they judge raj yogas. The factors:
- Dignity of the two lords. Own sign or exaltation gives more; debilitation or an enemy's sign gives less.
- Where they meet. A connection in a kendra, trikona, the 2nd or the 11th is stronger. The same connection in the 6th, 8th or 12th house tends to bring money with effort, debt or expense attached.
- Mixed lordship. If one of the lords also rules the 6th, 8th or 12th, its results are mixed.
- Combustion and affliction. A lord too close to the Sun, or hemmed in by malefics, delivers less.
- Timing. This is the big one. A dhana yoga gives its results mainly in the mahadasha or antardasha of the planets that form it. If those periods fall late in life, or pass in childhood, the yoga may show little in the years that matter to you. Our guide to Vimshottari dasha explains how to see them.

A worked illustration
This is a made-up chart, used only to show the method.
Suppose the lagna is Leo. Then the 2nd house is Virgo and the 11th is Gemini, both ruled by Mercury. The 5th is Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, and the 9th is Aries, ruled by Mars.
- If Mercury and Jupiter are in the same sign, the engine lists Dhana yoga: Mercury (lord of the 2nd) and Jupiter (lord of the 5th) are in the same sign.
- If Mercury is in Aries and Mars is in Virgo, they have exchanged signs: another Dhana yoga, between the 2nd and 9th lords.
- Then weigh it: is Jupiter in its own sign or debilitated? Is Mercury combust? Which house does the connection fall in, and when do the Mercury, Jupiter or Mars dashas run?
Why "pay to unlock your dhan yoga" is wrong
Some sellers tell people "you have a strong dhan yoga, but it is blocked" and offer a paid puja, a gemstone or a yantra to "open" it. A yoga is simply where the planets stood at birth. It is not locked, and no purchase opens it. Someone who is anxious about money is the last person who should be spending on fear.
