Mulank 3 is the root number of everyone born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st or 30th of a month, and it is ruled by Jupiter, the guru among the grahas. Mulank 3 people are traditionally read as natural learners and explainers: they want to understand why things are the way they are, and once they understand, they want to pass it on.
That is a tendency, not a job description. A 3 might never stand in a classroom and still be the person the whole family phones before a big decision.
What mulank 3 means
In Vedic astrology Jupiter is Brihaspati, teacher of the devas. He signifies wisdom, dharma (right conduct), faith, teachers and elders, children, wealth that grows over time, and expansion in general. He is the largest planet in the sky and the graha most often called naturally benefic. Where the Sun rules the self and the Moon the mind, Jupiter rules understanding: the ability to see how things fit together and what they are for.
Three is the first number that makes a shape: a triangle, a beginning, middle and end, a teacher, a student and the thing learned. Ank jyotish gives it Jupiter's nature. A mulank 3 person tends to meet life by making sense of it. They collect ideas, look for the principle behind the rule, and often feel uneasy until they can explain something in their own words.
The four birth days shade this. The 12th carries a little of 1 and 2, independence and sensitivity; the 21st reverses the order; the 30th adds a zero, which some practitioners read as the plainest expression of 3.
Strengths that mulank 3 tends to show
- Explaining. A 3 can sit with a younger cousin's maths homework and make it click, often by finding an example from everyday life.
- Optimism with reasons. Jupiter expands. 3s tend to look for what could grow from a situation, and they usually have an argument for their hope rather than just a feeling.
- Counsel. Friends bring 3s their dilemmas because they listen for the principle, not only the gossip.
- Generosity. Books lent, time given, contacts shared. Jupiter's wealth is the kind that increases by being passed around.
- A sense of what is right. Many 3s have a strong inner compass and will speak up when something is unfair, calmly and with reasons.
Growth edges: what tends to help
The teacher's gift can slide into teaching when nobody asked. What tends to help is a simple question before advice: "Do you want my view, or do you want me to listen?"
Jupiter expands everything, including plans. A 3 may say yes to five good causes and finish two. Choosing fewer commitments, and closing each one properly, lets the generosity land.
Confidence in one's understanding can make it harder to hear that one is wrong. Keeping a little room for "I may have missed something" is part of real wisdom, and 3s usually respect it once they notice it.
Finally, ideas are comfortable; bodies and budgets are less interesting to many 3s. Plain routines for sleep, food and money support everything else.
Relationships and friendships
We read number relationships from the natural graha friendships in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Jupiter counts the Sun, Moon and Mars as friends, Saturn as neutral, and Mercury and Venus as needing more distance. Using the old rule that Rahu acts like Saturn and Ketu like Mars, mulank 3 has:
- Friendly: 1, 2, 7 and 9
- Neutral: 4 and 8
- Asks for more patience and understanding: 5 and 6
Another 3 is in harmony with a 3.
The patience group has an old story behind it. Jupiter is guru of the devas; Venus, as Shukracharya, is guru of the asuras. Two teachers of two different schools will naturally see things differently. Mercury is quick and clever where Jupiter is slow and principled. So a 3 with a 6 may differ on what matters (meaning versus enjoyment), and a 3 with a 5 on how to think (depth versus speed). Friendship is not always mutual, either: from 5's side, 3 is only neutral. None of this is a warning. It simply shows where two people may need to explain themselves a little more. Work and fields traditionally associated
Ank jyotish traditionally links number 3 with teaching at every level, research and scholarship, law and judging, religious and spiritual work, advising and consulting, counselling, publishing and writing, and finance and banking, since Jupiter also signifies wealth that accumulates. Roles that involve mentoring younger people or guiding an institution's direction are often named too.

Mulank 3 and bhagyank 3
The mulank is your day-to-day temperament, your first response. The bhagyank, from the whole date of birth, is read as the broader direction of your life. A mulank 3 with bhagyank 4, for instance, has a teacher's instinct walking an unconventional road, which can make for someone who explains new ideas well. Where traditions differ
- Friendly numbers. Many popular lists group 3, 6 and 9 together as one family, which places 6 among 3's friends. Our method, based on Jupiter's friendships with the grahas, places 6 in the patience group. Cheiro's Western Chaldean school also uses Jupiter for 3, but reads 4 as Uranus and 7 as Neptune, so its pairings for 3 differ from ours as well. We say which method we use rather than blend them.
- Born between midnight and sunrise. The civil date changes at midnight; the Hindu day (vaar) begins at sunrise. Someone born at 4 a.m. on the 12th is a 3 by the calendar but could be read as a 2 by the Hindu day. Indian practitioners differ on this. Our calculator uses the civil date.
- Master numbers. Some Pythagorean systems keep 11, 22 and 33 unreduced. Indian ank jyotish does not use master numbers; every day reduces to 1–9.
- Lucky colours and dates. Lists of colours, days and stones for 3 vary from author to author. Apart from Jupiter's traditional weekday, Thursday, we treat none of them as settled.
