Five sits in the middle of the numbers 1 to 9, and many 5s live that way, in the middle of things, connecting one person, idea or market to another.
What mulank 5 means
In Vedic astrology Mercury, Budh, is the graha of buddhi: intellect, discrimination, speech, writing, arithmetic, trade and humour. He is pictured as the young prince of the planetary court, clever, witty and a little changeable. Mercury also takes on the colour of the grahas he sits with, which is why tradition calls him adaptable, sometimes to a fault.
In the Puranic story Budh is the son of the Moon. The old commentators link his coolness towards the Moon, which appears in the friendship tables below, to that story. It is a reminder that even in myth, a quick mind and a feeling heart do not always understand each other at first.
Ank jyotish gives the number 5 this nature. Five senses, five fingers, five elements: it is the number of contact with the world. A mulank 5 person tends to meet life through exchange, of words, goods, jokes, news. They learn by talking, and they often understand a subject best just after they have explained it to someone else.
Only three days give mulank 5, and each has its shade. The 14th carries 1 and 4 in the background, independence and an unconventional streak; the 23rd carries 2 and 3, adding sensitivity and a teacher's patience to the 5's speed.
Strengths that mulank 5 tends to show
- Speed of mind. A 5 at a family function can follow three conversations, remember everyone's news and still notice the caterer is running short.
- Words. Whether it is a persuasive message, a clear email or a funny toast, 5s tend to find the right words quickly.

- Neutral: 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9
- Asks for more patience and understanding: 2
Another 5 is in harmony with a 5.
Notice how wide the neutral group is. That fits Mercury's nature: he takes on the colour of his company, and 5s can get along workably with most people. The one number that asks for more patience is 2, and here the friendship runs one way. The Moon counts Mercury as a friend, so a 2 often warms to a 5 quickly; the 5 may find the 2's feelings slower to read. The fix is simple and in the 5's own gift: slow down and ask. Where traditions differ
- Friendly numbers. Popular Hindi lists often give 5 a different set of friends, and Western writing in Cheiro's line often describes 5 as a number that mixes easily with every other. Cheiro also reads 4 as Uranus and 7 as Neptune rather than Rahu and Ketu, which changes the pairings. Our method follows Mercury's friendships with the grahas, and we say so.
- The ruler. Here the systems agree: Indian ank jyotish and Cheiro both give 5 to Mercury.
- Born between midnight and sunrise. The civil date turns at midnight; the Hindu day (vaar) begins at sunrise. Someone born at 2 a.m. on the 14th is a 5 by the calendar but could be read as a 4 by the Hindu day. Indian practitioners differ. Our calculator uses the civil date.
- Master numbers. Pythagorean systems keep 11, 22 and sometimes 33 unreduced. None of these touch mulank 5, and Indian ank jyotish does not use master numbers anyway.
- Lucky colours and dates. Lists of colours, days and stones for 5 vary widely. Beyond Mercury's traditional weekday, Wednesday, we do not treat any of them as settled.
