Mulank 4 is the root number of everyone born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd or 31st of a month, and in Indian ank jyotish it is ruled by Rahu. Mulank 4 people are traditionally read as original thinkers: they question the usual way of doing things, notice what others overlook, and are often drawn to the new, the foreign or the not-yet-accepted.
A good deal of numerology content online surrounds 4 with fear. We do not read it that way, and neither does the tradition at its best. Rahu's 4 is the number of the person who finds another road.
What mulank 4 means
Rahu is one of the two chhaya grahas, the shadow planets. It is not a body in the sky but a point: the north node, where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. In the Puranic story, Rahu is the asura who slipped in among the devas and tasted the nectar of immortality, and was cut in two for it. His head became Rahu, always hungry, always reaching.
From that story come Rahu's significations: appetite for experience, ambition, the foreign and the unfamiliar, technology and innovation, outsiders, sudden turns and unexpected openings. Rahu has no sign of its own in the classical scheme and no weekday of its own among the seven; the old rule says it acts like Saturn.
Four is the number of the square: four walls, four directions, a solid frame. Ank jyotish pairs this with Rahu, which at first seems odd. The pairing makes sense when you see how many 4s relate to structure: they are intensely aware of the frame, and that awareness is exactly what lets them question it. A mulank 4 person tends to ask "who decided it has to be done this way?" and then, often, to build a better frame.
The birth days shade this. The 13th and 31st carry 1 and 3 in the background, adding self-direction and a teaching streak; the 22nd doubles the 2, bringing more sensitivity to the 4's independence.
Strengths that mulank 4 tends to show
- Seeing another way. When a family business is stuck doing things "the way father did", the 4 is often the one who suggests moving the orders online, and has already worked out how.
- Comfort with the unfamiliar. New cities, new technology, people from other backgrounds: many 4s find these interesting rather than unsettling.
- Honesty about systems. 4s tend to notice when a rule no longer serves its purpose and are willing to say so.
- Staying power in their own project. Once a 4 is convinced of an idea, they will work at it quietly for a long time, whether or not anyone applauds.
- Loyalty to the underdog. Having often felt a little outside the circle themselves, many 4s make room for others who do.
Growth edges: what tends to help
The questioning mind can turn on itself. Many 4s spend years apologising for being different. What tends to help is the opposite: owning the originality plainly, "yes, I do it this way, and here is why", without either defending or hiding it.
Rahu's appetite reaches for the next thing. Finishing is where 4s often grow most. It helps to set one small completion target at a time and to mark it when it is done.
Sudden turns are part of Rahu's nature. A 4 who keeps a simple routine and a little savings as ballast can meet change with curiosity instead of strain.
Finally, being right about a flawed system does not always persuade people. Explaining the new idea in the old language, patiently, usually moves more than arguing.
Relationships and friendships
Our number relationships come from the graha friendships of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Rahu has no friendships of its own in that text, so we use the old rule that Rahu acts like Saturn. Saturn counts Mercury and Venus as friends, Jupiter as neutral, and the Sun, Moon and Mars as needing more distance; Ketu acts like Mars. That gives mulank 4:
- Friendly: 5, 6 and 8
- Neutral: 3
- Asks for more patience and understanding: 1, 2, 7 and 9
Another 4 is in harmony with a 4.
The patience group is the largest of any number so far, and that fits the 4's experience of feeling slightly out of step. It does not mean difficulty. With a 1 (Sun) the difference is usually about authority: the 1 wants to lead the established way, the 4 wants to change the way. With a 2 (Moon), it is pace of feeling. With 7 and 9 (Ketu and Mars) it is often directness. In each case, naming the difference out loud tends to help. The table above lists the groups, and your full chart matters far more than two digits.
Work and fields traditionally associated
Ank jyotish traditionally links number 4 with work that is new, technical or crosses boundaries: technology and computing, electronics, research and investigation, aviation, foreign trade, work abroad or with foreign organisations, media and cinema, and newer industries that did not exist a generation ago. Reform work, whether in society, a company or a field of knowledge, is often named as well.
These are associations from tradition, not guarantees of a career, income or success. A 4 might be quietly content as a craftsperson who has invented a better tool for their trade; what tends to matter is room to think differently.
Mulank 4 and bhagyank 4
The mulank is your day-to-day temperament, your instinctive first move. The bhagyank, from the full date of birth, is read as the broader current of your life. A mulank 4 with bhagyank 6, for example, has a questioning instinct on a road of harmony and care, perhaps someone who reforms the way a family or community looks after its people. Where traditions differ
Number 4 is where systems disagree most, so it is worth being precise.
- The ruler itself. Indian ank jyotish gives 4 to Rahu. Cheiro's Western Chaldean school, working after the discovery of the outer planets, gives it to Uranus and treats 4 as closely linked with 1 (the Sun). Both read 4 as unconventional, but the friendships differ: by our method, 1 is in 4's patience group.
- Rahu's friendships. Classical texts do not give Rahu natural friends. The rule "Rahu acts like Saturn" is widely used but not universal; some practitioners use other schemes. We say plainly that we use this one.
- Popular lists. Popular Hindi lists give 4 their own friendly and "difficult" numbers, and they often disagree with each other.
- Born between midnight and sunrise. The civil date turns at midnight; the Hindu day (vaar) begins at sunrise. Someone born at 3 a.m. on the 13th is a 4 by the calendar but could be read as a 3 by the Hindu day. Indian practitioners differ. Our calculator uses the civil date.
- Master numbers. Pythagorean systems often keep 22 unreduced as a master number. Indian ank jyotish does not; the 22nd is mulank 4.
- Lucky colours and days. Because Rahu has no weekday of its own, any "day for 4" is a later convention, and lists differ.
A calm closing
Mulank 4 describes a mind that questions, looks sideways and builds new frames. That is a tendency to reflect on, not a fate, and nothing to be anxious about.
