Crow in a Dream: The Link With Ancestors

A crow in a dream, a crow cawing, eating food or sitting on the roof: the folk belief tied to pitru paksha and shraddh, and what psychology says, calmly.

What follows is what swapna shastra and folk tradition say, told as tradition. A dream is not a prediction: it does not decide money, health or anyone's life, and no dream needs a puja or a paid remedy.

On this page

A crow in a dream is linked in Indian tradition first of all with the ancestors (pitra): remembering them, their blessing, or their being talked about at home. That is folk belief, not a forecast; a crow dream is neither a message nor a warning.

The crow, shraddh and pitru paksha

During the fortnight of pitru paksha, shraddh food is cooked and its first portion is set out on the roof or in the courtyard for the crows. The belief is that the crow carries the food to the ancestors, and when a crow eats, the family feels at peace. So the crow, ignored the rest of the year, is called with respect in those days.

The crow has other faces too. In the Ramcharitmanas, Kakbhushundi is a wise sage in the form of a crow who narrates the story of Ram. In jyotish tradition the crow is Shani's mount. And villages still say that a crow cawing on the parapet means a guest is coming. So the crow is a bird of memory and messages, not of fear. In Hinglish the search is sapne mein kauwa dekhna.

What psychology says

The crow is the bird we see most often, so it turns up in dreams easily. But in India it often arrives together with the memory of someone we have lost, especially around pitru paksha, a death anniversary, or after looking at an old photograph. Dream research suggests dreams carry our waking feelings forward; the person you have been thinking of can appear in the shape of a crow. Crows are also very intelligent birds that recognise faces and use objects as tools, so in a dream a crow can simply stand for cleverness.

If it leaves you tender

If the dream brought back someone you miss, remember them warmly; sharing a story about them with your family is often a comfort in itself. No dream calls for a special ritual or expense.

See deceased relatives in a dream, an owl in a dream and relatives in a dream. The omen belief about a cawing crow is on a crow cawing, and more meanings are in the dream list.

Frequently asked questions

Is seeing a crow in a dream good or bad?

In Indian tradition the crow is linked with the ancestors, so most people connect it with remembering them or with their blessing. A few lists tie some forms to worry, but it is tradition, not a prediction.

What does a crow eating food in a dream mean?

Because the first portion of shraddh food is offered to crows, folk belief reads it as the ancestors being content. It is a matter of feeling, not a message or an instruction.

Why do I dream of crows during pitru paksha?

In those days the family talks about the ancestors, prepares for shraddh and calls crows to the roof. The day's thoughts come back at night; it is entirely natural.
