Folk lists are split on a buffalo in a dream: a calm buffalo giving milk is mostly read as plenty at home, while riding a buffalo or being chased by one is linked with worry in several lists. That is belief, not a forecast. The Hindi search is sapne mein bhains dekhna.
The buffalo's two faces
In the villages of north India the buffalo has long been a family's biggest asset: milk, ghee and income. The saying jiski lathi uski bhains, "whoever holds the stick owns the buffalo", shows how valuable it was. In the Puranas, though, the male buffalo (mahisha) is Yama's mount, and Durga defeated Mahishasura, a demon who took the form of a buffalo. From those two pictures the dream readings split: prosperity on one side, caution on the other.
One thing needs saying plainly: the link with Yama is only a symbol. Seeing a buffalo in a dream has no effect on anyone's lifespan or health.

What psychology says
The buffalo is thought of as slow, heavy and stubborn; bhains ke aage been bajana, "playing the flute to a buffalo", is said of someone who will not listen. In dreams a buffalo often stands for a situation that will not budge, or a person your words are not reaching. For people with village roots the dream may simply come from memories of home, fields and animals.
A calm word
A buffalo dream is not a message of danger. If the buffalo in your dream would not move, ask what you are trying to push through by force; sometimes changing the approach works better.
