Monkey in a Dream: Meaning in Indian Tradition

Dreaming of a monkey, a troop of monkeys, a monkey biting or chasing you: the two traditional readings, the link with Hanuman, and the psychological side.

What follows is what swapna shastra and folk tradition say, told as tradition. A dream is not a prediction: it does not decide money, health or anyone's life, and no dream needs a puja or a paid remedy.

On this page

Tradition gives two kinds of reading for a monkey in a dream: a calm monkey is held auspicious because of its link with Hanuman, while a jumping, snatching monkey is read in many lists as pointless quarrels or a restless mind. That is belief, not a forecast. The Hindi search is sapne mein bandar dekhna.

The monkey in Indian stories

In the Ramayana the vanara army built the bridge to Lanka, and Hanuman, himself a vanara, became the great symbol of devotion and strength. On Tuesdays many people feed monkeys roasted gram and jaggery. In daily life, though, the monkey is also the creature that steals clothes off the terrace, grabs fruit and makes mischief. Sayings such as "what does a monkey know of the taste of ginger" and "a razor in a monkey's hand" come from that restlessness. Both pictures run through the dream readings.

What psychology says

Monkeys behave a great deal like us, so in dreams they often mirror our own nature. Meditation teachers speak of the "monkey mind", the mind that jumps from thought to thought. If you are juggling too much, sleeping badly or losing hours to your phone, a leaping monkey may be a picture of that restlessness. In towns where monkeys really are a daily nuisance, the dream may come straight from the day's experience.

A calm suggestion

If the dream felt restless, try a little time away from screens before bed and give your mind one thing to settle on. If the monkey was calm and the dream felt good, keep it in that spirit. Nothing more is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is a monkey in a dream good or bad?

Tradition holds both views. A calm monkey is read as auspicious because of Hanuman; a jumping, snatching monkey as pointless quarrels or a restless mind in many lists. It is a belief, not a prediction.

What if a monkey bit me in the dream?

Folk lists link it with a spat with a friend or neighbour. A bite in a dream does nothing in waking life.

What do many monkeys in a dream mean?

A troop is usually read as several tangles at once or a noisy, crowded time: a house full of guests, a hectic office.
