Indian folk tradition is split on a cat in a dream: most north Indian lists connect it with cunning or a small quarrel at home, while many call a white or calm cat auspicious. That is belief, not a prediction; a dream cat decides no harm. The Hindi search is sapne mein billi dekhna.
How tradition sees the cat
The best-known Indian belief about cats is the one that says you should stop if a cat crosses your path (we have a page on it: a cat crossing your path). The cat arrives silently, steals milk from the kitchen and stays awake at night, and those habits made it sly and mysterious in folk tales. The proverb billi ke bhagya se chheenka toota, "the hanging pot broke by the cat's luck", comes from the same picture. At the same time many homes keep a cat fondly because it protects stored grain from rats.

What psychology says
A cat is independent, watchful and does as it pleases. In dreams it often stands for a person or a temperament you cannot quite read: near and yet distant. Sometimes it is the part of your own nature that wants to be left alone. If you recently saw, adopted or were startled by a cat, the dream may simply come from that.
A calm word
There is nothing to fear in a cat dream. If the cats were fighting, ask yourself whether something has been left unsaid at home; a direct conversation is usually the best "remedy" there is.
