Most north Indian folk lists read a lizard in a dream as a mild caution, about someone's cunning or a little friction at home, while in south India the lizard is often held auspicious, a creature that "tells what is coming". That is belief, not a forecast. The Hindi search is sapne mein chipkali dekhna.
The lizard in tradition
The house lizard is the most common companion in Indian homes, catching insects by the tube light. South India has a whole tradition, gowli shastra, that reads meaning from the direction of a lizard's chirp and the part of the body it falls on (we cover it separately: a lizard falling on you). At the Varadaraja Perumal temple in Kanchipuram, devotees touch golden and silver lizards on the ceiling. In the north, a lizard seen on Diwali night is thought lucky, but at other times many people link it with disgust or a mild bad omen.

| A lizard catching an insect | Seizing an opportunity |

| Killing a lizard | Victory over a trouble |
| A dead lizard | A worry ending (in some lists) |
| A lizard's dropped tail | Leaving something behind and moving on |
What psychology says
For most people the lizard brings mild disgust and a start: it appears suddenly and darts away. In dreams it often stands for something that bothers you without being dangerous: a remark that stung, an awkward relationship. A lizard can drop its tail and grow it back, and that image also fits the feeling of escaping by leaving something behind. If you were startled by a lizard at home recently, the dream may come straight from that.
A calm word
A lizard dream is nothing to be afraid of. If something small is nagging at you, naming it and talking it through is the best way forward.
