Bhoomi Pujan: what it is

Bhoomi pujan is the worship of the earth before construction begins — the first digging and the laying of the foundation stone (shilanyas). Muhurta Chintamani treats it as griharambha, the start of building a house.

What the classical rules look at

The griharambha rule looks first at the solar month: building is begun with the Sun in Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn or Aquarius, and not in Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces. Fixed and soft nakshatras and Hasta are used; the Panchaka nakshatras (Dhanishta to Revati) are barred for construction, so we leave them out. Chaturmas, kharmas, adhik maas and the combustion of Jupiter or Venus stop the rite, and Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Bhadra are avoided within the day.

How practice varies

Vastu practice adds the direction of the first dig (usually the north-east) and the position of Vastu Purusha, which changes through the year; builders in many cities simply use the almanac dates. Some traditions look at the tithi only in Shukla paksha. Because the solar-month rule is strict, long stretches of the year have no bhoomi pujan date at all.

These dates come from our own engine applying open rules — no AI. We do not check lagna shuddhi, personal tara/chandra bala, panchaka or regional customs, and the rules are the strict core many traditions share, so some almanacs will list dates that are missing here. Frequently asked questions

Why is there no bhoomi pujan date for months at a time?

The solar-month rule alone rules out about five months, and Chaturmas and kharmas overlap them. The empty months on these pages say which rule applies.

Is bhoomi pujan the same as griha pravesh?

No. Bhoomi pujan starts construction; griha pravesh is the first entry into the finished home. They have different rules and usually different dates.
