Vidyarambh: what it is
Vidyarambh (akshar-arambh) is the start of a child's learning — writing the first letters, often in rice or on a slate, before Saraswati or Ganesha. It is usually done around the age of five, before formal schooling.
What the classical rules look at
Wednesday (Mercury, learning), Thursday (Jupiter, the teacher) and Friday are the days; the sources that list weekdays leave Monday, Tuesday and Saturday out. The fixed, movable, soft and light nakshatras are used, and tithis 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 11 and 12 of both pakshas, Shukla paksha being better. Rahu kaal and Bhadra are avoided; an adhik maas is left out.
How practice varies
In Kerala and Karnataka vidyarambham is done on Vijayadashami, and in the North many families choose Vasant Panchami; both are festival days kept by custom whatever the weekday. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana the rite is aksharabhyasam, often at Basar.

Is Vasant Panchami a good day for vidyarambh?
It is Saraswati's day and many families use it by custom. Our list checks every day by the same rules, so it shows Vasant Panchami only when those rules hold.
Is vidyarambh the same as the first day of school?
Not quite: vidyarambh is the ritual first writing. Many families still pick one of these dates for the first day of school or a new course.
