Mundan: what it is

Mundan (chudakarana) is the child's first haircut, the eighth samskara. It is usually done in the first, third or fifth year, often at a family temple or a river bank, with the hair offered afterwards.

What the classical rules look at

Muhurta Chintamani allows chudakarana only in the solar months of Uttarayana — Sun in Capricorn, Aquarius, Aries, Taurus or Gemini, but not Pisces. That single rule leaves every year without dates from mid-July to mid-January, and again while the Sun is in Pisces (mid-March to mid-April). Within those months, the movable, soft and light nakshatras and Jyeshtha are used, the good tithis of both pakshas, and Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Rahu kaal, Bhadra and Vyatipata/Vaidhriti are avoided, and it is never done at night.

How practice varies

Many families do the mundan at a place fixed by custom — Vindhyachal, Tirupati, a kuldevi temple — and follow that shrine's calendar. Some avoid mundan when the mother is more than five months pregnant, and some avoid the Sun in Taurus for the eldest child; both are personal rules we do not apply.

These dates come from our own engine applying open rules — no AI. We do not check lagna shuddhi, personal tara/chandra bala, panchaka or regional customs, and the rules are the strict core many traditions share, so some almanacs will list dates that are missing here. Frequently asked questions

Why are there no mundan dates from mid-July to mid-January?

The Sun is then in Cancer through Sagittarius, outside the Uttarayana months the texts allow for chudakarana. The dates return once the Sun enters Capricorn in mid-January.

At what age is mundan done?

Usually in the first, third or fifth year (odd years), by family custom. The dates here are the same for any age.
