Vivah: what it is
Vivah muhurat is the time chosen for the wedding rites themselves — usually the pheras or saptapadi, not the reception. Hindu almanacs publish a list of wedding dates each year, and families then fix the exact hour with their priest.
What the classical rules look at
Muhurta Chintamani names eleven nakshatras for marriage, among them Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula and Revati. Only tithis 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11 and 13 of either paksha are used — so the Rikta tithis (4, 9, 14), Ashtami, Purnima and Amavasya are out — and Bhadra is avoided. Weddings stop entirely while Jupiter or Venus is combust (Guru or Shukra asta), during kharmas, in an adhik maas and through Chaturmas — which is why a whole season can have no dates at all. Wedding windows may run through the night.
How practice varies
North Indian families usually go by the almanac list and a night-time lagna; in the South and in Maharashtra a morning muhurtham is common, and the lagna (ascendant) of the moment carries more weight. Some communities also accept Sunday, Tuesday or Saturday, and many regard Akshaya Tritiya and Dev Uthani Ekadashi as days that need no separate muhurat. Our list keeps only the strict shared core, so it is shorter than most almanacs.
These dates come from our own engine applying open rules — no AI. We do not check lagna shuddhi, personal tara/chandra bala, panchaka or regional customs, and the rules are the strict core many traditions share, so some almanacs will list dates that are missing here. Frequently asked questions
Why are there no wedding dates in some months?
Because a whole-day rule is in force: Chaturmas (from Devshayani to Devuthani Ekadashi), kharmas (Sun in Sagittarius or Pisces), an adhik maas, or Jupiter or Venus being combust. Each empty month on these pages names the rule that emptied it.
Is our date bad if it is not on this list?
Not necessarily. We keep only what the main traditions share, and we do not look at lagna or at the couple's own charts. A priest who does may accept a date we leave out.
