Griha Pravesh: what it is

Griha pravesh is the first formal entry into a new home, usually with a kalash, a small puja or havan, and boiling milk in the new kitchen. It is done for a newly built house (apoorva), a return after a long absence (sapoorva) or a house rebuilt after damage (dwandwah); the rules below are the ones for a new home.

What the classical rules look at

The texts favour fixed (dhruva) and soft (mridu) nakshatras — Rohini, Mrigashira, the three Uttaras, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati — so that the household settles and stays. Shukla paksha is preferred; of Krishna paksha only the first days up to Panchami are used. Rahu kaal, Yamaganda, Bhadra and the Vyatipata and Vaidhriti yogas are avoided, and whole days are left out in kharmas, Chaturmas, adhik maas and while Jupiter or Venus is combust. The entry is made in daylight.

How practice varies

Many families add a vastu puja on the same day, and some enter at a set lagna given by the priest. In parts of the South the entry is made before sunrise. Where a family has to move during Chaturmas, a small puja on entry with the full ceremony later is a common compromise.

These dates come from our own engine applying open rules — no AI. We do not check lagna shuddhi, personal tara/chandra bala, panchaka or regional customs, and the rules are the strict core many traditions share, so some almanacs will list dates that are missing here. Frequently asked questions

Can we move in during Chaturmas?

Our rules leave Chaturmas out for griha pravesh, as most almanacs do. If moving cannot wait, many families shift with a simple puja and hold the full griha pravesh after Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

Does a rented flat need a griha pravesh muhurat?

Tradition ties the full rite to a home you own or have built. Many tenants still prefer a good day to move; the same dates serve.
