Karnavedha: what it is
Karnavedha is the ear-piercing samskara, the ninth of the sixteen. The texts place it on the 10th, 12th or 16th day after birth, or in the sixth, seventh or eighth month; in practice it is often done later, sometimes together with the mundan.
What the classical rules look at
The soft, light and movable nakshatras are used — Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Revati, Ashwini, Pushya, Hasta, Punarvasu, Shravana and Dhanishta. Every tithi but the Rikta ones, Ashtami and Amavasya is accepted. Kharmas and Chaturmas stop the rite, as does an adhik maas; within the day Rahu kaal and Bhadra are avoided.
How practice varies
In the South (kaadhu kuthal) the piercing is often done at the family temple in the first year; in the North many families combine it with the mundan or a thread ceremony. Some traditions pierce the right ear first for a boy and the left for a girl.

We do not check lagna shuddhi, personal tara/chandra bala, panchaka or regional customs, and the rules are the strict core many traditions share, so some almanacs will list dates that are missing here. Frequently asked questions
Can karnavedha be done with the mundan?
Yes, many families do both on one day. Then the day must suit both: use a date that appears in both lists.
Why is Chaturmas left out?
The almanac practice for karnavedha excludes the four months of Hari shayana, as it does kharmas; we follow it.
